A question for the whole room

One story to open. A room full of ideas to test.

Ready in three steps

  1. Open the story.Read and try the first pages together.
  2. Pause for a prediction. At the story’s question, read its choices aloud. Invite a vote and ask, “What makes you think that?”
  3. Run it. Watch. Wonder.Choose the class’s prediction, run the experiment, and compare what happened with your guesses.

Different guesses are welcome. The experiment gives everyone something to rethink.

Something to put on paper

A one-page prediction and observation sheet. No answers included.

After the experiment: discussion notes

Talk about what happened

  • A searcher finds one Ravi, but the task is to invite every Ravi. What would you check next, and how would you know the job is finished?
  • Predict first: if we double the list to 200 cards, how many MORE peeks will the middle-jumping search need — lots more, or just one more?
  • Predict first: what happens to the middle-jumping trick if we shuffle the cards out of order? Why does it stop working?

Where it shows up in real life

  • Finding a contact instantly among thousands on a phone
  • Looking up a word in a dictionary by opening near the middle
  • A guessing game where 'higher or lower' hints let you zero in fast
