A question for the whole room

One story to open. A room full of ideas to test.

Ready in three steps

  1. Open the story.Read and try the first pages together.
  2. Pause for a prediction. At the story’s question, read its choices aloud. Invite a vote and ask, “What makes you think that?”
  3. Run it. Watch. Wonder.Choose the class’s prediction, run the experiment, and compare what happened with your guesses.

Different guesses are welcome. The experiment gives everyone something to rethink.

Something to put on paper

A one-page prediction and observation sheet. No answers included.

After the experiment: discussion notes

Talk about what happened

  • Predict first: two liquids at the exact same room temperature get mixed. Do you think the thermometer can only stay the same, or could it move? Which way?
  • Predict first: a cold-pack gets icy without anything cold inside. Where do you think the coldness comes from?
  • If mixing made the cup hotter, did the reaction make brand-new energy — or let out energy that was already there? How could you tell?

Where it shows up in real life

  • A snap-and-shake hand-warmer that heats your pockets in winter
  • An instant cold-pack from a first-aid kit that turns icy when you squeeze it
  • Baking soda stirred into vinegar, which fizzes and feels slightly cool
