A question for the whole room

One story to open. A room full of ideas to test.

Ready in three steps

  1. Open the story.Read and try the first pages together.
  2. Pause for a prediction. At the story’s question, read its choices aloud. Invite a vote and ask, “What makes you think that?”
  3. Run it. Watch. Wonder.Choose the class’s prediction, run the experiment, and compare what happened with your guesses.

Different guesses are welcome. The experiment gives everyone something to rethink.

Something to put on paper

A one-page prediction and observation sheet. No answers included.

After the experiment: discussion notes

Talk about what happened

  • Two samples start with 240 grams of water each. Freeze one without losing water: does the balance tilt or stay level?
  • Which variable changed, and which stayed the same?
  • How would the result change if both containers were instead filled to the same final line?

Where it shows up in real life

  • An ice cube bobbing in a glass of juice or soda
  • A frozen lid on a winter pond with fish still alive underneath
  • An iceberg showing only its tip while nine-tenths hides below the waterline
